Summer in Schenna is a time to celebrate, have fun and explore Meran and its surroundings. You can enjoy all the many wonders of nature, climb up into the mountains of South Tyrol and discover some mysterious and evocative places. You can follow a different path every day, stopping off at a traditional mountain hut or a picturesque inn. Nature-lovers who stay at the Maria Apartments will find there are so many opportunities for a delightful active holiday in the Meran area.
With 300 days of sunshine a year and over 200 km of trails, Schenna is a real mecca for those who love the mountains and the natural world. From pleasant walks among the vineyards to hikes through the high peaks: there is something for everyone to choose from, whatever your preference and physical capacity.
Just a few kilometres from our apartments, you'll come to the base station of the Meran 2000 ski-lifts, a popular area for skiers and hikers. From here, you can ride cable car up to the top station and then follow one of the many paths on this beautiful plateau.
The little hamlet of Schennaberg is close to the village centre, and right at the foot of Mt. Ifinger. The traditional farms and hamlets are connected by a series of paths, which are easy and comfortable for walking. There are various mountain huts, inns and restaurants where you can stop for refreshment or just to relax in the sun. A walking holiday around Meran offers infinite possibilities!
The Schenna "Waalweg" Trail takes you through the orchards and chestnut groves around Schenna. This delightful walk follows the route of a "Waal": the name given to the irrigation canals traditionally used by local farmers. Even on hot summer days you can find many quiet, shady places along the banks of the canal, from where you can enjoy views of Meran and the Vinschgau mountains.
What about an enjoyable bike ride? Just 100 metres from our apartments there's a place to rent the latest bikes. There are even some e-bikes for cycling novices.
If you've spent a busy morning hiking or mountain-biking, an afternoon swim is a very enticing prospect. Luckily, during the summer, our guests have free access to the outdoor pool in Schenna, with its wonderful scenic views. Are you ready to dive in?
On the other hand, the Meran Thermal Baths are a delightful way to relax in both summer and winter. There are lots of wonderful options to choose from: various indoor pools, a large outdoor pool, different saunas and Turkish baths and a huge range of beauty treatments.
In the nearby village of Dorf Tirol, the Provincial Museum in Castle Tyrol is definitely worth a visit. The ancient seat of the Counts of Tyrol houses a large museum detailing the history and culture of South Tyrol, and also hosts some interesting travelling exhibitions. We also advise you to look round the inside of the castle: it really is worth the while!
A summer holiday in Schenna is also a time for festivals and entertainment. The village associations organise various festivals every summer, featuring live music and dancing and, of course, plenty of typical South Tyrolean specialities.
Every first Sunday of the month, from May to October, the so-called "Tallner Sunntig" (Tallner Sunday) takes place in the village of Tall. The landlords of Obertall, Videgg, and the Hirzer hiking area organise a series of special events, allowing you to sample the full range of South Tyrolean culinary specialities.
Spoil your taste buds - and enjoy your active holiday in Meran!
